Title : Novel treatment of head and neck cancer related lymphedema

Abstract

While diagnosis and treatment of upper extremity lymphedema is routine after comprehensive breast cancer treatment, similar treatment of head and neck cancer survivors is sorely lacking.  The cardinal finding in many head and neck cancer survivors is submucosal (internal) lymphedema. Prompt identification and treatment of head and neck lymphedema can improve swallow outcomes and other deleterious functional outcomes in the head and neck and, in turn, improve quality-of-life dramatically in survivors.  Herein, we describe a novel daily at-home treatment modality for head and neck cancer related lymphedema. This treatment is discussed in the context of development of a survivorship pathway for head and neck cancer patients.
