Title: Effect of the type of denture base material on the colonization of candida albicans in oral mucosa in an animal model

Abstract

The human oral cavity is a unique ecological niche, oral candidiasis is the final outcome of the vulnerability of the host as to the virulence of the invading organism,a major virulence factor of Candida albicans is its ability to adapt to different environments. The treatment of such mucosal infections and the elucidation of the disease is challenging. Experimentally induced oral candidiasis is useful to clarify the etiopathology of this condition, improve diagnosis, and search for new therapeutic designs. The rat model is considered one of the well-proven models for observing oral candidal colonization and infection. When growing on a medical device or mucosal surface, Candida albicance resides as communities embedded in a protective matrix, usually, they resist the host defenses, which include depositing and incorporation of several proteins into the biofilm matrix. This will emphasize the role of the denture base materials in enhancing the colonization, proliferation of Candida Albicans, and the inflammation of the palatal mucosa.

Such studies consider as a powerful tool in understanding the pathogenesis, host interactions, and the management of oral mucosal candidal infections.
