Title: Unilateral Double-Barreled Internal Auditory Meatus with Severe Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Rare Case of Diagnostic Challenge

Abstract

The duplicated narrow Internal Auditory Canal (IAC) is a congenital anomaly of the ear that leads to unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. We present a rare case of an IAC with duplication in an 11-year-old boy. High-resolution Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were used to visualize the bone structure and evaluate neural components, respectively. CT scan revealed the narrowing of the IAC diameter. MRI showed the significant thinning of the right cochlear nerve and inferior vestibular nerve. This is a unique case as it is the first case reported in the literature of unilateral internal auditory canal duplication with severe sensorineural hearing loss where an air-conduction hearing aid was helpful. Diagnosis of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss in adolescents should encompass a physical examination, audiometric tests and imaging modalities such as HRCT and MRI.
